Artysta urodził się w Mediolanie, gdzie studiował w Civica Scuola di Musica, następnie w genewskim Centre de Musique Ancienne. Jest założycielem i członkiem barokowego zespołu Il Giardino Armonico, którym kieruje od 1989 r. Występował z nim jako dyrygent i solista (flet prosty i flet traverso) w Europie, Stanach Zjednoczonych, Kanadzie, Ameryce Południowej, Australii, Japonii oraz Malezji. Jest dyrektorem artystycznym Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Wratislavia Cantans oraz głównym gościnnym dyrygentem Mozarteumorchester Salzburg i Kammerorchester Basel.

Współpracuje z wieloma wybitnymi artystami, takimi jak Cecilia Bartoli, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Giuliano Carmignola, Isabelle Faust, Sol Gabetta, Sumi Jo, Viktoria Mullova, Katia i Marielle Labèque, Emmanuel Pahud i Giovanni Sollima. Ceniony za przemyślane i nieszablonowe interpretacje repertuaru klasycznego i barokowego, regularnie prowadzi gościnnie najsłynniejsze orkiestry, m.in. Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, London Symphony Orchestra i Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Wśród przedstawień operowych, którymi dyrygował, znajduje się m.in. Wesele Figara Mozarta i Alcyna Händla w mediolańskiej La Scali i Opernhaus Zürich, Juliusz Cezar Händla i Norma Belliniego z Cecilią Bartoli podczas Salzburger Festspiele. W 2018 r. artysta powrócił do Opernhaus Zürich, aby poprowadzić wykonanie Idomeneo Mozarta. W sezonie 2018/19 po raz pierwszy wystąpi z Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra (soliści: Viktoria Mullova i Avi Avital) oraz Czech Philharmonic, będzie dyrygował koncertowymi wykonaniami Fidelia Beethovena i Don Giovanniego Mozarta (z Kammerorchester Basel), wykona symfonie Mozarta oraz arie Glucka i Mozarta z Magdaleną Koženą i Orkiestrą Wieku Oświecenia, poprowadzi również operę Orlando Händla w Theater an der Wien.

Giovanni Antonini nagrał z Il Giardino Armonico wiele albumów, na których znalazły się instrumentalne dzieła Vivaldiego, włoskich kompozytorów XVII i XVIII w., J.S. Bacha (m.in. Koncerty brandenburskie), Bibera i Locke’a (Teldec), jak też Ottone in villa Vivaldiego (Naïve). Przez ostatnie lata wraz z zespołem współpracował z wytwórnią Decca (m.in. płyta Alleluia z Julią Lezhnevą). Z Kammerorchester Basel nagrał symfonie Beethovena, a niedawno, z Emmanuelem Pahudem, album Revolution z koncertami fletowymi. W 2013 r. zarejestrował Normę Belliniego z Orchestra La Scintilla (Decca).

Giovanni Antonini jest dyrektorem artystycznym projektu Haydn2032, którego założeniem jest nagranie i wykonanie wszystkich symfonii Haydna przed 300. rocznicą urodzin kompozytora z udziałem Il Giardino Armonico oraz Kammerorchester Basel. Pierwszych sześć albumów zostało wydanych przez Alpha Classics, kolejne będą się ukazywać po dwa rocznie.

Born in Milan, Giovanni Antonini studied at the Civica Scuola di Musica and at the Centre de Musique Ancienne in Geneva. He is a founder member of the Baroque ensemble Il Giardino Armonico, which he has led since 1989. With this ensemble he has appeared as conductor and soloist on the recorder and Baroque transverse flute in Europe, the United States, Canada, South America, Australia, Japan, and Malaysia. He is Artistic Director of Wratislavia Cantans International Festival in Poland and Principal Guest Conductor of Mozarteumorchester Salzburg and Kammerorchester Basel.

He has performed with many leading artists including Cecilia Bartoli, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Giuliano Carmignola, Isabelle Faust, Sol Gabetta, Sumi Jo, Viktoria Mullova, Katia and Marielle Labèque, Emmanuel Pahud, and Giovanni Sollima. Renowned for his refined and innovative interpretation of the classical and Baroque repertoire, Antonini is also a regular guest with Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Tonhalle- Orchester Zürich, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, London Symphony Orchestra, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His opera productions have included Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Handel’s Alcina at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and Opernhaus Zürich, Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto and Bellini’s Norma with Cecilia Bartoli at the Salzburg Festival. In 2018 he conducted Handel’s Orlando at the Theater an der Wien and returned to the Opernhaus Zürich for Mozart’s Idomeneo. During the 2019/20 season, Antonini conducted Giulio Cesare in Egitto at La Scala and returned to Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Czech Philhamonic, and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. During the 2020/21 season, he conducts Alcina and Idomeneo at Opernhaus Zürich and returns to Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Bamberger Symphoniker, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

With Il Giardino Armonico Antonini has recorded numerous CDs of instrumental works by Vivaldi, J. S. Bach (Brandenburg Concertos), Biber and Locke for Teldec. With Naïve he recorded Vivaldi’s opera Ottone in Villa, and for Decca he has recorded 2 volumes with Julia Lezhneva. Later with Alpha Classics (Outhere Music Group) he released various albums: among all La Morte della Ragione, collections of 16th- and 17th-century instrumental music. With Kammerorchester Basel he has recorded the complete Beethoven Symphonies for Sony Classical and a disc of flute concertos with Emmanuel Pahud entitled Revolution for Warner Classics. In 2013, he conducted a recording of Bellini’s Norma for Decca in collaboration with Orchestra La Scintilla.

Antonini is Artistic Director of the Haydn2032 project, created to realise a vision to record and perform with Il Giardino Armonico and Kammerorchester Basel the complete symphonies of Joseph Haydn by the 300th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The first 8 volumes have been released on the Alpha Classics label with two further volumes planned for release every year.
