Benjamin Hulett


Benjamin Hulett studiował w New College w Oksfordzie oraz pod kierunkiem Davida Pollarda w Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Przez dokonywanie nagrań ciągle umacnia swoją pozycję jako śpiewak operowy, koncertowy i recitalowy.
W latach 2005–2009 był członkiem zespołu Staatsoper w Hamburgu i z sukcesem kreował takie role, jak Tamino, Ferrando, Novice oraz Steuermann, by następnie występować tam gościnnie i śpiewać partie Tamino i Narraboth. Zadebiutował w Bayerische Staatsoper w Monachium w Alcinie Händla, w Staatsoper w Berlinie w Fedrze Henzego, w Theater an der Wien w światowej premierze Die Besessenen Kalitzkego, na Festiwalu w Salzburgu w Elektrze R. Straussa, na Festiwalu w Baden-Baden w Salome R. Straussa, a następnie w Czarodziejskim flecie Mozarta, oraz w Teatro dellʼOpera w Rzymie jako Madwoman w Curlew River Brittena, a następnie jako Gonzalve w Godzinie hiszpańskiej Ravela. W Wielkiej Brytanii Benjamin Hulett zadebiutował jako Peter Quint w Opera North, Ferrando w Grange Park Opera oraz Fenton w Opera Holland Park. Wystąpił też w National Theatre w inscenizowanej wersji Pasji wg św. Mateusza w reżyserii sir Jonathana Millera. W Royal Opera House zadebiutował jako Edmund w Manon Lescaut Pucciniego, a następnie powrócił tam jako Beppe w Pajacach Leoncavalla. Na scenie Glyndebourne Festival Opera wykonywał partię Lisandra w Śnie nocy letniej oraz występował w Saulu Händla.

Artysta jest cenionym wykonawcą pieśni. Występował w Wigmore Hall, na Aldeburgh Festival, Buxton Festival, Oxford Lieder, Leeds Lieder, w National Portrait Gallery, na Henley Festival, Freie Akademie der Künste w Hamburgu, Staatsoper w Hamburgu oraz w Maastricht. Współpracuje także z pianistami: Andrásem Schiffem, Grahamem Johnsonem, Malcolmem Martineau, Christopherem Glynnem, Josephem Middletonem, Simone Young i Alexandrem Soddym. Dokonał nagrań utworów z różnych epok, od baroku po dzieła zamawiane współcześnie, za które otrzymywał nominacje do nagród i nagrody „BBC Music Magazine”, „Gramophone”, Grammy, Złotego Orfeusza oraz „Diapason”.
W bieżącym sezonie Benjamin Hulett po raz pierwszy będzie kreował rolę Toma Rakewella w Żywocie rozpustnika Strawińskiego w Caen, Limoges, Reims, Rouen i Luksemburgu. Ponownie wystąpi na Glyndebourne Festival, tym razem w nowej produkcji Hipermestry Cavallego. Wystąpi też z BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (pod dyrekcją Juanja Meny), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (pod dyrekcją Johna Wilsona) oraz w wiedeńskim Musikverein.

Benjamin Hulett trained as a choral scholar at New College, Oxford and studied with David Pollard at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has a growing reputation as an opera and concert singer, recitalist and recording artist.
A member of the Hamburg State Opera from 2005–2009, Ben’s successes included Tamino, Ferrando, Novice and Steuermann and he returned as a guest Tamino and Narraboth. He made his debuts at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich in Handel’s Alcina, Berlin Staatsoper in Henze’s Phaedra, Theater an der Wien in the world premiere of Kalitzke’s Die Besessenen, for the Salzburg Festival in Strauss’ Elektra, for the Baden Baden Festival in Strauss’ Salome, returning for Die Zauberflöte, and for the Rome Opera as Madwoman in Curlew River, returning for Gonzalve in L’heure Espagnole. In the UK Ben made his role debut as Peter Quint for Opera North, sang Ferrando for Grange Park Opera, Fenton for Opera Holland Park, and Luzio in Das Liebesverbot for the Opera du Rhin, Strasbourg, and he appeared in Sir Jonathan Miller’s staging of St Matthew Passion at the National Theatre. He made his debut with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as Edmondo in Manon Lescaut, returning as Beppe in Pagliacci. And for the Glyndebourne Festival Opera he performed Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and in Handel’s Saul.
Concert highlights include the BBC Proms under Norrington, Gardiner and Davies, Maderna’s Venetian Journal with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Arbace in Mozart’s Idomeneo with Fabio Biondi, Britten’s Serenade with Norrington, Hogwood and the Trondheim Soloists, The Creation with Haïm and Pinnock, Die Frau Ohne Schatten under Jurowski, Missa Solemnis under Bolton and Herreweghe, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under Herreweghe and Brüggen, Mozart Requiem on tour in the Far East under Herreweghe, Das Paradies und die Peri under Norrington at the Edinburgh Festival, the title role in J.C. Bach’s Lucio Silla under Bolton at the Salzburg Mozartwoche, Bernstein’s A Quiet Place with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Nagano, L’heure Espagnole with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit, and Tamino with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Rattle.
Increasingly in demand as an interpreter of song, he has performed at Wigmore Hall, Aldeburgh Festival, Buxton Festival, Oxford Lieder, Leeds Lieder, National Portrait Gallery, Henley Festival, Freie Akademie der Künste in Hamburg, Hamburgische Staatsoper and Maastricht, collaborating with pianists Andras Schiff, Graham Johnson, Malcolm Martineau, Christopher Glynn, Joseph Middleton, Simone Young and Alexander Soddy. Ben’s recordings range from the early baroque to new commissions and have received nominations and awards from the BBC Music Magazine, Gramophone, Grammy, L’Orfee d’Or and Diapason.
This season Benjamin will perform his first Tom Rakewell (The Rake’s Progress) in Caen, Limoges, Reims, Rouen and Luxembourg, and return to the Glyndebourne Festival in new production of Cavalli’s Hipermestra conducted by William Christie. In concert he appears with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (Juanjo Mena), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (John Wilson), and at the Vienna Musikverein.
