B U R U N D A N G A is a new work by Anna Zaradny, one of the leading Polish composers of electroacoustic music and sound artists of the twenty-first century, co-leader of an experimental revolution that has taken place on Polish independent scene at the turn of centuries. The composition can be seen as a certain breakthrough in the artist’s work: for the first time she put the human voice, and more specifically: feminine voice in the center – both in the material and symbolic way. The voice in B U R U N D A N G A is a tool used not only for communication, but also to do magic: it has real power to transform reality. That expression of feminine energy – so inarticulate, transgressive, sometimes intolerable – is at the same time subjected to restrictions, suppression, which reflects the actual balance of power, in the broad socio-cultural context. The revolt in defense of identity is so expressed by the sounds of the physiological process of breathing in, powered by the energy carried by air between syllables, sounds, phrases. Will the Wrocław audience leave with the impression of an endless apnea, inability to release an articulate, unfettered message?
The current version of the B U R U N D A N G A is the first presentation of this piece, a stereophonic sketch of an extensive multi-channel composition, registered in 2017 at the famous Stockholm EMS Studio. The programme of this session will be complemented by a range of Anna Zaradny’s earlier electroacoustic works, published between 2008–2016, joined by the dominance of sophisticated synthetic audio materials and the leading role of form-making, multi-layered, processed textures.
