Auditions for the position of Concertmaster of Wrocław Baroque Orchestra

Olga Humeńczuk, Director of the Witold Lutosławski National Forum of Music, and Jarosław Thiel, Artistic Director of the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra, announce auditions for the position of Concertmaster of Wrocław Baroque Orchestra. 

Application deadline: March 1, 2026.

Auditions will be held on March 30, 2026, at 9.30 am in a concert hall of the National Forum of Music in Wrocław, Plac Wolności 1 (alternative date: April 30, 2026). They will be preceded by a preselection based on video recordings, which should be submitted by email to audition.wbo@nfm.wroclaw.pl by March 1, 2026. Candidates will receive information about the preselection results by March 10, 2026.

a)    In your opinion, what are the key characteristics of an excellent concertmaster?
b)    What artistic and performance elements do you consider most important and worth developing in an ensemble?

Pre-Selection
Candidates are asked to submit recordings containing two different video fragments in the role of concertmaster or leader/first violinist of a chamber ensemble.

The recorded pieces should be submitted as separate files, without cuts or editing.

Stage I
You will be asked to play the following repertoire:

  1. A suite for violin and basso continuo of your choice (or an arrangement of a harpsichord suite) in the French style (Marchand, Philidor, Dieupart, Rebel, etc.).
  2. One movement (in fast tempo) of a late Baroque virtuoso concerto (Bach, Vivaldi, Leclair, Locatelli, etc.) of your choice.
  3. The first movement of a Mozart violin concerto with your own cadenza. Please choose from the following: Concerto in G major K 216, D major K 218, or A major K 219.
  4. One movement (in fast tempo or in introduction – fast tempo sequence) of a late Classical sonata. Suggested Beethoven sonatas or other sonatas of your own choice with a similar scale of difficulty to be performed with piano with a range of 5 octaves in the a' = 430Hz pitch

Stage II:
In the final stage of the exam, a maximum of three candidates selected in the earlier stages will be invited to participate in selected rehearsals and concerts of the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra.

Note:

  1. Candidates chosen in the pre-selection process will be invited to auditions.
  2. A detailed schedule for Stage I will be announced after the application deadline.
  3. The National Forum of Music does not reimburse travel or accommodation costs associated with participating in the audition.
  4. The National Forum of Music will provide two instruments for accompaniment for the auditions: a harpsichord tuned at 415 Hz and a fortepiano tuned at 430 Hz but will not provide an accompanist. Candidates may perform with their own accompanist.
  5. Candidates are asked to perform the audition programme in 415 Hz (Baroque repertoire) and 430 Hz (Classical and later repertoire).
  6. The first stage may be divided into two parts, depending on the number of candidates. The Committee will make the decision after the candidate list is closed and will inform each invited participant in a detailed email.
  7. The Committee may decide that all or part of the first stage of the audition will be conducted behind curtains, maintaining the anonymity of the candidates. After the candidate list is closed, the Committee will inform each invited participant in a detailed email.
  8. Please note that time for tuning on stage will be strictly limited. Whenever possible, tuning should take place backstage.
