Recently, interesting phenomena can be observed on the Scandinavian jazz scene. The variety of jazz currently practiced by artists from Sweden and Finland sounds fresh, original, even daring. It also does not resemble the achievements of the musicians whose names first come to mind when talking about Scandinavian jazz or the cool, nostalgic aura of their compositions. Artists such as the saxophonist Otis Sandsjö or the double bass player Petter Eldh play a strong, punklike variety of jazz.

Perhaps the music of Sandsjö and Eldh is not directly associated with the achievements of Scandinavian jazz, because they both live and work in Berlin, one of the most important centres of contemporary jazz and music in general, and their work is influenced not only by the jazz tradition, but also by electronic music and hip-hop. It is a kind of contemporary musical mosaic, the sound of a big city in the first decades of the 21st century.

Last year, a continuation of the Swedish saxophonist’s album, highly appreciated by critics and listeners, was released. The Y-OTIS II album is a development of the ideas contained on the previous album. It is progressive jazz using a rich sound palette – music that cannot be easily classified. Of course, it is still jazz, but not in its traditional, acoustic understanding. As Sandsjö said in an interview for MezzanineMastering.com, his band initially played acoustic jazz. “However, I quickly started experimenting with sampling and introducing elements from electronic music. Yet it was a slow process. Our main goal with the first album, and we remain faithful to this idea also today, was to enter the studio with partially prepared material, and partially to rely on improvisation, openness. I give my groupmates a lot of freedom because I trust them completely and I know that they will come up with something extraordinary,” he explained. “We did it the first time and we did the same for the next album,” emphasized Sandsjö.

At this year's Jazztopad Festival, Sandsjö and Eldh accompany the Swiss singer Lucia Cadotsch in her projects from the Speak Low series, much calmer in mood than their own. In addition, the audience will be able to see the stylistic diversity of these two artists' compositions also during the concert of Koma Saxo, led by Eldh.
