Architecture and acoustics

The NFM building was designed by Kuryłowicz & Associates Architecture Studio, selected through an international architectural contest. The architect was inspired by a musical instrument – its shape and the façade covering imitating timber resemble the body of a string instrument. The foyer, covered with black and white Corian, brings to mind the piano keyboard.

The main hall

THE MAIN HALL seats 1800 people and includes the parterre, amphitheatre, choir and three balconies.

The parterre is the part of the audience closest to the front of platform. The number of seats varies depending on the size of the performance – for concerts with very large ensembles or very small ensembles, the first five rows of seats (Ia-Ie) can be added or removed.

The amphitheatre includes seats in stepped rows facing the platform and  surrounding the parterre.

The Organ at the NFM

Feel the power of sounds!

A state-of-the-art organ will crown the NFM Main Hall. Equipped with 4 700 pipes, of which the shortest is just a few millimetres, and the longest over 10 metres long, it can produce sounds from the lowest heard by humans, 16 Hz, to very high – 18 000 Hz. The organ stop action has 80 voices (colours), including high-pressure and percussive. It can be played from two independent playing consoles – fixed and mobile. The organ is also fitted with recording equipment.
The NFM organ will be an outstanding work, inscribing itself for ever into the history of Wrocław, Lower Silesia, Poland, Europe and the world. Designed and made by organ builders from the Orgelbau Klais company based in Bonn, with over a century of tradition and experience, the organ will complement the NFM acoustic with its regal sound.

The chamber halls

Each of the three chamber halls has a unique character. All three halls have been designed as flat floor, flexible spaces and have been equipped with seats that can be rearranged to enable different spatial arrangements. For this reason, seating the chamber halls are not numbered.

All chamber halls are equipped with state-of-the art audio and video equipment

The Red Hall with 400 seats is located on level -3
The Black Hall with 230 seats is located on level -3 and designed for jazz and underground concerts.
The Chamber Hall with 220 seats is located on level +2.

Facilities

The cafe on the ground floor invites Wrocławians and tourists throughout the day and in the evening. It is accessible from the moat side.
The spacious music shop on the ground floor offers a large supply of CD and DVD albums, books and music.
In the intermission we invite you to the Foyer on level -1 where there is a bar and a drink bar, and on level 4 where there are two buffets offering drinks and snacks.
The VIP Room is reserved for audience members holding special invitations.

Dwarves

Dwarves are very sensitive and talented creatures. They love good music and dream about being close to the place where they can hear it. In addition, they love to play instruments themselves. So it's obvious that the little musicians joined the group of NFM artists!

Because during the day there are rehearsals and recordings in the halls and concerts are held in the evening, the Dwarves Symphony Orchestra gets prepared and performs in front of the NFM building – at Plac Wolności – where on the moat lined by trees the smallest instrumentalists feel inspired by the atmosphere of the Old Town Promenade. Szomol the Dwarf once sat at the Wrocław Philharmonic building, but he changed his location – he now sits near the NFM facade on the side of Krupnicza Street. As you can guess, he is also a musician. The figure of Szomol commemorates the composer of well-known music to poems by Julian Tuwim or a musical fairy tale for children and adults The Secret of Szomol the Dwarf - Włodzimierz Szomański, conductor and founder of the Spirituals Singers Band.

We invite you to meet the smallest musicians in Wrocław!
