The NFM Orchestra Academy is a new project of the National Forum of Music, whose aim is to provide professional orchestral training to young musicians between 18 and 30 years of age. On a monthly basis, the Academy participants attend training sessions run by the concertmasters and leaders of the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic and thus gain hands-on comprehensive orchestral practice which will help them meet the requirements posed to orchestral musicians.

The young and talented instrumentalists were selected to participate in the Orchestral Academy on the basis of the recordings they had submitted. From October through June they are introduced to the general principles of orchestral playing, get familiar with various styles and performance practices, acquire the knowledge necessary to be able to listen to each other and create the orchestra’s tone colour, phrases and interpretations.

Instrumental workshops are run in three segments:

– Individual tuition – focused on the individual features of each participant. The concertmasters and leaders offer guidance and assistance in overcoming technical difficulties and help the trainees prepare for future orchestral auditions (assisting them in learning the core repertoire for auditions and helping them to control stress).

– Group training – devoted to issues typical of particular orchestral section (violins, violas, cellos, double bass – in the future we plan to open the Academy to woodwind, brass and percussion). During group training we learn how to work collectively on articulation, dynamics, tempos and intonation.

– Orchestral training – offers an opportunity to get familiar with a wide orchestral repertoire and to translate the participants’ skills acquired during individual and group trainings into orchestral experience.  It is also an opportunity to collaborate with top-class musicians: in the 2015/2016 season including Henning Kraggerud, Bartłomiej Nizioł and Piotr Tarcholik.

Alongside instrumental training, there will be coaching run by a specialist in physical and psychological aspects of the musical profession. The lectures and workshops will be run by Jadwiga (Isia) Śmieszchalska, a graduate from the Institut Européen Médecine des Arts (2012) in which she obtained a diploma in performing arts medicine with a special award of the jury, bestowed for the first time in the 20-year-long history of the Institute.
