Johannes Brahms and Robert Fuchs often met each other in Vienna’s salons. They were friends, and Brahms tried to help the less resourceful Fuchs with his career. Both gentlemen would have been delighted by a concert presenting their piano quartets. Such is our programme on 19 February.
Robert Fuchs enjoyed the reputation of an outstanding teacher, and his students included Mahler and Sibelius. He did not care much about promoting his own works and did not like going away to hear his compositions performed. It comes as no surprise that Johannes Brahms is more popular nowadays. His Piano Quartet No. 1 has been a fixture in the repertoire of concert halls for over 150 years. The gypsy melodies and rhythms, the music full of verve and spontaneity and the crazy finale continue to impress every listener.
