Salon music, characterized by high levels of sentimentality and a penchant for the brillant style, is nowadays associated with a certain shallowness of expression. However at the time of its glory, the salon music emanated profoundness and authenticity of artistic experience, impossible to attain in a concert hall filled to capacity. Listening to the lieder repertoire with the piano accompaniment, we can feel wholeheartedly feel into the salon atmosphere. Yet, salon songs scoring wind instruments, such as the flute and the clarinet, are hardly ever performed nowadays. The programme features excerpts from the famous cycles by Spohr and Lachner, as well as pieces edited separately, penned by Fürstenau, Meyerbeer, and Donizetti. Songs will go side by side with instrumental works for flue, cello and piano, in addition to works for clarinet, cello and piano by Mendelssohn and Beethoven.
