The programme of Silius Trio on 19 March includes the well-known name of Schumann, but this time it is Clara, and not Robert, that they will play. The 20th century has yielded many women-composers, but previously composing had been deemed a typically male profession. This stereotype and many family obligations deterred Clara from writing her own music. Her only Piano Trio shows inspiration by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.
Bohulsav Martinů included a piano part in almost each of his compositions. The composer followed the trend to weave east European motifs into his works, so popular at his time. Shostakovich’s Trio No. 2 is characterized by intimate emotiveness the Russian giant revealed in his chamber works. This Trio is an elegy for Ivan Ivanovich-Sollertynsky, Shostakovich’s friend and notable musicologist and art connoisseur.
