Jazztopad has been in cooperation with the Vancouver International Jazz Festival for two years. As a result, Polish artists (Obara International, Piotr Damasiewicz Quintet, Marcin Wasilewski Trio) have performed in Canada as a part of Jazztopad Presents showcase. This time, Canadian jazz arrives in Wrocław.
The Canadian trio, Grdina/Houle/Loewen, comprises three experienced musicians who share precision and technical skill, but above all – a passion for finding new musical routes. Clarinettist François Houle is known for his ambitious improvisations on the border of jazz and contemporary music. Gordon Grdina and Kenton Loewen play on a daily basis with indie songwriter Dan Mangan in his band Dan Mangan + Blacksmith, but they're equally fascinated by improvised music. Loewen has long been a member of Mother Mother, while Grdina has been developing his interest in Arabic music (in Grdina/Houle/Loewen, he plays the oud).
Aruán Ortiz – composer, pianist and violinist of Cuban origin, brought up in New York – explores similar boundaries of jazz and contemporary classical, but from a different perspective, enriching his music with Haitian and Cuban influences. The evening at the NFM will be a chance to view contemporary improvisation from various angles.
