Two excellent guitarists, Mateusz Kowalski and Tomasz Radziszewski, have joined forces. Last year they released an album titled Delicious, and just before Christmas they will play together on the stage of the National Forum of Music. They will perform two duets by Ferdinando Carulli, several transcriptions of opera fragments and pieces by the Belgian organ genius César Franck, as well as the famous Concierto de Aranjuez.
After winning the Euro Strings competition in London in 2019, Mateusz Kowalski was described by “Classical Guitar Magazine” as “exceptional” and his playing as “breathtaking”. The reward for this triumph was a concert tour of Europe, the United States and Asia. For four years now Kowalski has been a lecturer at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. However, he did not cease to perform and plays music of various eras: from the Renaissance to contemporary, paying particular attention to the rules of performative practice, adamant to be consistent with the musical realities of the times from which the pieces come from.
Tomasz Radziszewski, who will perform alongside, is not only a guitarist, but also an opera singer (tenor) and composer. As an instrumentalist, he has won over thirty awards in solo and chamber music categories. The most important among them is by all means the first prize won at the International Guitar Competition in Tallinn. Like his colleague, Radziszewski is also interested in historical performance, although he is focused mainly on playing the romantic guitar.
The composer whose Nocturne concertante the guitarists will bring back to the repertoire – Victor Magnien – was a guitarist, violinist, conductor, and director of the Conservatoire de Lille. The four-movement work performed by the musicians represents the genre of salon music and is played brillante. The piece definitely deserves to be freed from the archives and brought back to life for the amateurs of classical guitar music to enjoy.
