There´s something unexpected cutting through the familiar static. A fragile moment. A sudden outburst. A deep connection.

/kry [kɹaɪ̯] is an instrumental Trio conceived by Alexander Yannilos, Mona Matbou Riahi and Philipp Kienberger in Vienna. The bands eccentric blend of contemporary grooves, avant-garde jazz and electronica leaves it completely untethered from any single genre, defying categorisation.
/kry’s sound is a revelry of simplicity and intuition, a celebration of complexity and control and an intricate fusion of its members’ individual influences. They released their debut album on FREIFELD Tontraeger in 2022.

Despite her age, Mona Matbou Riahi (*1990 in Teheran/Iran) is a well-established voice on the international scene. Her work combines contemporary and classical elements, improvisation as well as electronic experimentation. Her credits include the Teheran Philharmonic Orchestra, Iranian Duo “Naqsh” (ECM Records), Anthony Braxton, Gabbeh, and many more.

Philipp Kienberger (*1991 in Kärnten/Austria) has become a vital part of the Austrian scene and beyond, working in a multitude of projects covering everything from hard progressive rock with “Entrainment“ or “Jakuzi´s Attempt“, contemporary acoustic music with his string quintet “Kvin“ and “Studio Dan“, live HipHop with “Sketches on Duality“, modern day Jazz with “Little Rosie´s Kindergarten“, and much more.

Alexander Yannilos (*1989 in Vienna/Austria) has been (hyper-) active on the Austrian scene for over a decade, working with a long list of musicians, bands and venues as a drummer as well as a producer/engineer.
In 2011, he founded “Freifeld”, an association and independent label to support progressive music. He is constantly involved in a wide range of projects, exploring all forms of jazz, improvised and contemporary music, as well as modern pop, experimental club music, live electronics and music for theatre and film.
