During improvised sessions at Mleczarnia Club and Cafe, the Wrocław-Australian group Sundogs, bringing together drummer Samuel Hall, double bassist Zbigniew Kozera, and clarinetist Mateusz Rybicki, will be joined by My Trio, the acclaimed representatives of the young New York jazz scene. This is one of those bands that boldly push the boundaries of convention, drawing sounds from their instruments that their original makers never even dreamed of!
Yvonne Rogers plays piano, Tim Watson guitar, and Jon Starks drums, yet all three frequently turn to electronic tools, creating a one-of-a-kind microcosm that is chaotic and warm, reminiscent of the experiments of Joanna Duda or the Wood Organization duo. In interviews, the pianist emphasises how the unhurried cycles of the natural world have significantly shaped her compositions; she combines virtuosity with an interest in electronic sounds and unconventional methods of structuring musical material. Whereas the guitarist blends diverse influences: from an early fascination with progressive metal, particularly the Meshuggah band, to in-depth studies of Carnatic music. As for the drummer, his playing sits at the intersection of experimental jazz, free improvisation, electronics, and contemporary sound design.
Thanks to their inspiration drawn from the urban landscape and their long-standing collaboration with the Jazztopad Festival, Sundogs have become a fixture on Wrocław’s musical map. This year, they will be performing fresh off a concert tour, so you can expect an almost telepathic rapport and improvisation crackling with new ideas. Joining them on the Mleczarnia stage is Emmanuel Michael, a young guitarist, to whom melody and tradition are just as important as experimentation, sound, and the exploration of new possibilities. Double bassist Solomon Gottfried will also perform; he distinctively blends jazz heritage with the aesthetics of chamber music and diverse musical variations. He is a co-founder of CloseUp, New York City’s newest jazz club.
