Join us for a concert blending improvised music with traditional Ethiopian songs and the Korean gayageum. The first part of the evening will feature Musho, a duo of Sofia Jernberg with Alexander Hawkins, with special guest Hamid Drake, followed by the DoYeon Kim Quartet.
Born in Ethiopia and raised in Sweden, Sofia Jernberg now resides in Oslo. She is well-known to Polish audiences, especially from concerts where her bright soprano has often provided a counterpoint to dark, gritty saxophone lines. Her ability to move fluidly between free jazz, improvisation, and experimental opera is a hallmark of her work. She will be accompanied by pianist, organist, and composer Alexander Hawkins. Their duo’s name, Musho, comes from Amharic and means “sad song”. Traditional material, spanning Ethiopian, English, Armenian, and Swedish sources serves as a starting point and a catalyst for the duo to explore new improvisational territories. On this occasion, they will be joined by one of the most important and versatile drummers, Hamid Drake.
Following this set, we will hear the DoYeon Kim Quartet, led by the virtuoso of the gayageum, a traditional Korean zither resembling the Japanese koto and Chinese guzheng. Kim is a composer, vocalist, and improviser; she blends her native musical heritage with jazz and improvised music while developing new playing techniques for her instrument. Joining her on stage will be Mat Maneri, one of the world’s most acclaimed improvising violists; Nick Dunston, for whom the double bass serves as an instrument and a mobile sound laboratory; and Satoshi Takeishi, a drummer and composer regarded as a distinctive phenomenon on the global music scene.
