Although the Lutosławski Centenary celebrations were concluded long ago, February is a good time for bringing his music into focus, as on the 7th we commemorate his 20th death anniversary. On 6 February the NFM Symphony Orchestra will perform Mi-parti, where the subtle and intricate musical progress works the wonder of transmuting ‘freezing cold’ into ‘warm’. The nostalgic atmosphere of the night will culminate in Styx by Gia Kancheli as a tribute to his two favourite composers Avet Terterian and Alfred Schnittke, who both crossed the mythical river of death shortly before Styx was completed. Their names will be sung by the NFM Choir, and Jennifer Stumm on the viola will add to the elevated, liturgical mood. The concert’s finale is Hector Berlioz’s Harold in Italy, featuring on Stumm’s latest album. The dark and deep tone of the viola depicts the adventures of the Byronian eponym: an uprooted pilgrim, never and nowhere forgetting his existential pain.
