‘I play as if I were the best violinist in Europe,’ wrote Mozart to his father. And his father replied: ‘You do not even know how good you are at it. If you trusted yourself more and played more energetically, with all your heart and mind involved, yes, you would be the first violinist in Europe.’ What happened next? A spectacular violinist career? A spectacular career yes, but of keyboard virtuoso and composer. Mozart, as a result of various altercations, took exception to the violin (to his father’s despair), and apart from five violin concertos written as a very young man, would never again devote his talent to this instrument.  
Three of the five will be played by Ernst Kovacic. Mozart’s violin concertos explode with youthful élan, genius and fancy.  The pieces are colourful, unpredictable and must be played flawlessly. And there are no flaws to Kovacic’s playing.
