Although the performers of the 23 April concert are three outstanding Polish virtuosi: violinist Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, cellist Tomasz Strahl and pianist Wiktor Szymajda, the programme does not include a piano trio. Instead, the musicians have decided to treat you to pieces in various line-ups: solo, in a duet or solo with piano accompaniment. The attractive programme features works of Baroque (Geminiani, Bach, Handel), Classicism (Haydn, Beethoven), and Romanticism (Wieniawski, Lipiński and Tchaikovsky). Bartók and Kodály add 20th-century folk-inspired flavours to this gourmet menu. The Kodály Sonata for solo cello is justly called a paramount achievement of the genre, on a par with the Johann Sebastian Bach’s suites.
