Many Wrocławians cannot think of a Holy Week without attending a Passion concert. At the Philharmonic hall, as in Leipzig’s churches centuries ago, every year one of Bach’s Passions can be heard. This time St John Passion will be performed on Monday to set us in the right spiritual Easter mood.
Bach’s heartrending music speaks to everyone, also to people who do not identify themselves with the Christian dimension of his works. The emotive and colourfully expressive work tackles issues unfathomed by our minds and poses questions so far unanswered: about the aim of our lives, about moral dilemmas, about death and life thereafter. This exceptional music makes an exceptional line-up a requisite. The concert on 30 March features tenor Nicholas Mulroy cast as Evangelist by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Paul McCreesh and Marc Minkowski. As in the times of Bach, the choral parts will be sung by the boys’ choir. The critically acclaimed Wrocław Baroque Orchestra will be directed by Andrzej Kosendiak.
