Marc-Antoine Charpentierwas a French composer of the Baroque era. By his contemporaries, he was most appreciated for his compositions on religious sibjects. His most popular work is the orchestral introduction to Te Deum, aired at the beginning of the Eurovision Song Contest. However, the output of this artist includes many other intriguing compositions.
Andrzej Kosendiak will conduct two works by Charpentier devoted to the theme of Christmas during this concert. In nativitatem Domini canticum H 414 is a late work, completed in 1684. This austere and serious composition perfectly reflects the majesty and splendour of the Savior's birth.
The six-movement Messe de minuit pour Noël H 9 is the Midnight Mass, the service to be celebrated at midnight, commemorating the expectations and prayers of the shepherds going to Bethlehem to find the Baby Jesus. The mood of this Charpentier composition is varied. The listener will find here both charming fragments based on a singing melody, as well as deep and serious episodes. Like the previous work, the mass was composed around 1690.
