During the concert of the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra, Gidon Kremer – a recognized Latvian violinist and artistic director of the ensemble – will perform. The musicians will play works by composers who are especially appreciated by Kremer – Astor Piazzolla and Mieczysław Weinberg. The evening will begin with the sounds of compositions by Ukrainian composers Victoria Polova and Mykola Leontovych.
Warm Wind for violin, vibraphone and strings by Victoria Polova refers to the Spring concerto from Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi, although with a modification of its main theme. Then we will move into a contrasting, winter mood thanks to Carol of the Bells – a world-famous Christmas carol, whose sound was written by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych at the beginning of the 20th century. The title of the Raminta Šerkšnytė's piece – This Too Shall Pass – refers to the inherent element of every human existence, which is passing. The musicians will also introduce the works of one of the most interesting musical personalities of the 20th century: the Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla – the creator of the original, elaborate style of tango nuevo, containing a characteristic rhythm. The echoes of this intriguing dance can be heard in each featured piece – Tres minutos con la realidad, Le grand tango, Celos and Fuga y misterio.
The second part of the concert is devoted to the project At first there was… noise, carried out by Kremerata Baltica in collaboration with Robert Wicke. It is about the path from silence through noise to music. Kremer, as the ensemble’s leader, uses the works of Mieczysław Weinberg – one of the most intriguing composers of the last century. His legacy has only recently attracted due attention in Poland and abroad. Wajnberg’s oeuvre is very extensive – it includes 153 compositions bearing opus numbers, as well as many pieces written for films or for the radio. We will hear, among others, Gallop, Kujawiak, Concertino and Waltz. All works by this composer included in the programme will be presented by the musicians in unconventional arrangements.
