Alias is a one-movement piece, written in the musique surrealistique technique. Unlike Hanna Kulenty's previous works, it contains no juxtaposition of contrasting, harmonizing or competing musical themes. Its form is based on only one theme, multiplied, transformed, stretched, and tightened in time, both musical and non-musical. The structure of the piece allows for a smooth and natural permeation of these two tenses, like a kind of perpetuum mobile. The feeling the composer intends to evoke can be compared to that accompanying the viewing of surrealist paintings by Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher. Just as Escher's works, which show, for example, a staircase that leads upwards and downwards at the same time, and we cannot tell at which moment the direction changes, Kulenty wants to achieve the coexistence of spatiotemporal planes without evoking the impression that something has suddenly changed.
