Works by Franz Schubert and Anton Bruckner will fill the repertoire of the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic concert conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero. That evening we will also hear a composition by Erwin Schulhoff – Concerto for String Quartet and Wind Orchestra, which the musicians will perform together with the Lutosławski Quartet.

The Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern is the title of a play by Helmina von Chéza, to which Franz Schubert, a leading composer of the Romantic era, wrote incidental music. However, the most frequently performed musical fragment of the work to this day is the Overture that opens it. The play itself was not particularly popular, as the title was removed from the bill only after it had been staged twice. Despite this, the composer’s work has survived in the minds of music lovers and continues to delight generations with its melodiousness. The overture will precede an extraordinary work – Concerto for String Quartet and Wind Orchestra by a Czech composer of German origin – Erwin Schulhoff, from 1930.

Like Ludwig van Beethoven, Anton Bruckner composed nine symphonies. Both composers complained about being misunderstood by their audiences. Although their works are considered visionary today, they had to wait long for proper recognition. Beethoven’s fame continues to date, and Bruckner is now considered one of the greatest symphonists of the late Romantic period. His Fourth Symphony in E flat major was written in the years 1874–1876, and the subtitle “Romantic” was given to it by the composer. The score of the work has functioned in several versions over the years, this evening we will hear the one from 1878–1880, the best known and most frequently performed.
