The musical culture of the United States is a synthesis of diverse styles, influences and tendencies. In the interpretation of the soloists and musicians of the West Side Sinfonietta, we will hear numerous arias, waltzes and fragments of musicals, including the My Fair Lady and the West Side Story.
The concert will begin with the sounds of Leroy Anderson’s charming waltz Belle of the Ball. It will precede a string of charming arias from various operas and musicals written by American composers, active in the second half of the 20th century. So we will hear the Letter Aria and the Warm as the Autumn Light from Douglas Moore’s opera The Ballad of Baby Doe, based on the life and love story of Elizabeth McCourt Tabor, a famous figure from the times of the Wild West. The work expresses the deepest human emotions and universal truths, thanks to which it has gained the favour of music lovers around the world.
The West Side Story the title of a musical that can be found in the catalogue of Leonard Bernstein’s works. The work is based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet, but its action takes place in the 1950s on the streets of New York. The composer, creating the musical layer, showed an excellent intuition, perfectly handling the sound spectrum reflecting the characters’ experiences. In the second part of the concert, the musicians will perform the Fantasia on themes from Frederick Loewe’s beloved 1956 musical My Fair Lady. After premiering on Broadway, the production entered the canon of musicals and has been continuously staged around the world ever since.
