The legendary violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter will perform again at the National Forum of Music, this time reaching for Romantic pieces for violin and piano, written by Johannes Brahms and his friend Clara Schumann. Together with the pianist Lambert Orkis and the cellist Maximilian Hornung, the artist will also perform trios of contemporary American composers André Previn and Sebastian Currier.

Three Romances op. 22 for violin and piano by Clara Schumann went down in history as one of the composer’s last works. They were written in 1853, so at the end of her beloved husband Robert Schumann’s life. The romance genre was one of her favorites, which is clearly reflected in the emotional and sweetly lyrical melody of the composition. The well-developed textures of the violin and piano parts acquire equal importance here. At the time when Clara was writing her romances, the Schumann couple also established a friendship with the young Johannes Brahms, significantly supporting the development of his career. At the NFM, the musicians will perform his Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor op. 108, written in the last years of the composer’s life. The work, consisting of four expressively differentiated movements: Allegro, Adagio, Un poco presto e con sentimento and Presto agitato, represents the fully crystallized Brahmsian style. Like in a kaleidoscope, there are fragments closer to lyricism, as well as those that radiate characteristic spontaneity.

The concert’s repertoire also features works by American artists born in the 20th century: André Previn and Sebastian Currier. The former was a respected jazz pianist, he also worked as a conductor with the best symphony orchestras in the world. His output encompasses film music, but also classical music, in which we can find a beautiful piano trio. Tonight, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Lambert Orkis and Maximilian Hornung will also perform the European premiere of Sebastian Currier’s Ghost Trio – a composition paying tribute to the most famous piano trios of the past, woven from musical quotations referring to the legacies of Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Franz Schubert.
