The legendary violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter will perform again at the National Forum of Music! This time the artist has chosen Romantic pieces by composers who are very close to her – Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann – for violin and piano. Together with pianist Lambert Orkis and cellist Maximilian Hornung, the artist will also perform Piano Trio in D Major, Op. 70 No. 1 “Geister Trio” (“Ghost”) by Ludwig van Beethoven and Ghost Trio by Sebastian Currier, a composition that is a tribute to the most famous piano trios of the past.

Piano Trio in D Major, Op. 70 No. 1 “Geister Trio” (“Ghost”) is undoubtedly one of the most mysterious works by Ludwig van Beethoven. It was composed in the period in which the artist created, among others, two excellent symphonies: the ground-breaking Symphony No. 5 in C Minor and Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral”. The story behind the trio’s enigmatic title is not known, although it is suspected that it was related to Beethoven’s plans to compose the opera Macbeth. In the Largo movement the composer used sketches from the score of this work. Macbeth, however, never saw the light of day.

Three Romances for Violin and Piano, Op. 22 by Clara Schumann went down in history as one of the composer’s last works. She created them in 1853, towards the end of the life of her beloved husband – the great composer Robert Schumann. Romance was one of Clara’s favourite genres, and this is clearly reflected in the composition’s highly emotional and sweet lyrical melody. Developed textures in the violin and piano parts are given equal ground. Around the time when she was composing these pieces, the Schumanns made acquaintance with the young Johannes Brahms, which helped him considerably in his career. At the NFM, Anne-Sophie Mutter will perform his Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108, created in the last years of the composer’s life. This work, consisting of four movements that are diverse in their expression – Allegro, Adagio, Un poco presto e con sentimento and Presto agitato – displays the fully formed Brahms style. With this style as a foundation, we also see a kaleidoscope of fragments that are closer to lyricism, as well as those with characteristic vibrancy. On the same evening Anne-Sophie Mutter, Lambert Orkis and Maximilian Hornung will also give the European premiere of Ghost Trio by Sebastian Currier – a composition woven out of musical quotations referring to the artistic output of Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert.
