This provocative, uncompromising trio from Zurich was founded in 2015 and since then the artists have been developing their music, perfecting fierce, brilliant sound dialogues and building a concise repertoire. The band members: alto saxophonist Tapiwa Svosve, double bass player Silvan Jeger and drummer Vincent Glanzmann have a long history behind them that goes beyond UASSYN and also beyond jazz and improvised music.
The group released their debut album Zacharya in 2021. It is characterized by fluidity and changeability, a collection of post-bop pieces composed by the trio. Reinchard Köchl in Jazzthing magazine wrote: “In no way ordinary - this could be the motto of the young Swiss trio UASSYN. Although the band’s line-up – saxophone, double bass and drums – has a long tradition in the history of jazz, the sound of the band is very far from traditional. This is thanks to the extraordinary rhythm patterns created by drummer Vincent Glanzmann, the steady sounds of Silvan Jeger’s double bass and the unique sounds that Tapiwa Svosve produces on the alto saxophone.”
The group spent the first years improvising and developing their concepts in the rehearsal room. They also strengthened their relationship publicly – as the core of a quintet led by the Swiss trumpeter Silvan Schmid. Together, the musicians show how easily and skillfully they can create melodic post-bop. In 2017, the artists toured Switzerland with acclaimed ECM recording pianist Colin Vallon, who played with them in clubs all over the country. But then they focused again on their own trio and left Switzerland to perfect their concept abroad. The group is clearly embedded in the jazz tradition, despite the fact that its members draw inspiration from various areas. The music on the Zacharya album is febrile, but it’s still nothing compared to what the artists of UASSYN are able to show on stage in front of an audience. Don’t forget to fasten your seat belts.
