We cordially invite you to the New Year’s Gala, which will be a great occasion for a grand and joyous celebration. A musical feast to the rhythm of thrilling Johann Strauss II waltzes and polkas alongside fragments of favourite operas this evening will be served by the musicians of the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic under the direction of the Italian conductor Gianluca Marcianò.

The operetta Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss had its premiere in April 1874. It aroused the admiration of the audience and was quickly recognised as a masterpiece all over the world. It has a libretto with many twists and turns, accompanied by light and melodic music that fully reflects the carefree atmosphere of carnival madness. The captivating ball atmosphere is already perceptible in the overture. The same is true of the other compositions by Strauss II, which feature in the concert’s repertoire - the charming waltzes The Blue Danube and the Roses of the South.

The Main Hall will also be filled with the sounds of the famous overture to Gioacchino Rossini’s opera Guillaume Tell, musically evoking the picturesque alpine setting. Shortly after the Paris premiere, the overture overshadowed the opera itself in popularity. It turned out to be the last in Rossini’s oeuvre, and the thrilling final gallop has enchanted generations of music lovers. Then we will hear ballet music from Giuseppe Verdi’s great operas: Otello and Macbeth. These are compositions full of splendour, attracting with colorful instrumentation and lively character. The evening will end with The Dance of the Hours from the third act of Amilcare Ponchielli’s La Gioconda, portraying the various times of the day and night. Woven of subtle and sophisticated melodic phrases, the music is adored by audiences all over the world. It was also featured in the 1940 Disney production of Fantasia – a collection of animated stories illustrating famous pieces of classical music.
