Leo Festival 2025

The first to claim that what nature has shaped is complemented and reflected by the arts created by humans was Aristotle, and undoubtedly to this day the sounds of nature are one of the most important sources of inspiration for composers and musicians.

The elements have their own sounds, and animals make distinct sounds of a specific pitch, which can be imitated with instruments or voices. The wealth of nature’s colours prompted the Italian priest, Antonio Vivaldi, to compose his all-time hit, Le quattro stagioni, in 1723. This piece will be performed by the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra and one of the most original and courageous Polish ensembles: Bastarda Trio. The work of the Venetian master will be interwoven with hard to predict improvised fragments, which will be performed by our guests.

The history of civilisation is a history of an increasingly deep separation of humans from nature. Today we see that the process that for centuries we considered a blessing is also the cause of our alienation. Personally, I believe that music still connects us with nature in an instinctive way; and to the greatest extent, the music of communities living close to it, i.e. folk art. It inspired artists such as Johannes Brahms, Béla Bartók and Pyotr Tchaikovsky to compose chamber masterpieces that will resound in the beautiful spaces of Topacz Castle. The event will be crowned by Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F major op. 68 “Pastoral” in a version for strings with electronic effects. On the occasion of Children’s Day, on 1 June, I decided to present the profile of the most famous child prodigy in the history of music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who mastered the language of music incredibly early, as if he had been born with it. The audience will hear amazing, witty fragments from Mozart’s letters to his father and sister, as well as the Kinder-Symphonie in C major, known as the Symphony of Toys, most probably composed by Wolfgang’s father, Leopold Mozart, with the participation of our youngest artists from Wrocław music schools. It will be fun!
