The string trio form has its roots in the Baroque trio sonata. In late Romanticism, the genre, thriving in the era of Classicism, found itself for some time on the margins of composers’ interests. It made a return in the first half of the 20th century, thanks to the composers of the Second Viennese School, who had radical aesthetic views, Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. Almost a hundred years later, how will Przemysław Scheller, Grzegorz Pieniek and Katarzyna Dziewiątkowska use the violin, viola and cello in their new works?
The composers, whose new works will be presented by NFM Leopoldinum String Trio, come from various backgrounds. Przemysław Scheller is a graduate of Aleksander Lasoń’s composition class at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice. In 2018, he obtained his doctorate and currently works at his alma mater as an assistant professor. He is a collector of ethnic instruments from all over the world. In his work, he likes to use electronics and multimedia. Grzegorz Pieniek, author of On the Verge, is a Polish artist living in Vienna. He studied composition with Lidia Zielińska at the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań and at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna in the class of Michael Jarrell.
Katarzyna Dziewiątkowska represents Wrocław’s artistic community. She comes from a musical family, and graduated from the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music, where she studied with Krystian Kiełb, Cezary Duchnowski and Zbigniew Karnecki. In 2014, she obtained her doctorate in composition. Since 2023, she has been working as an assistant professor at a local music university.
