Rebellion has been the driving force of popular music since the dawn of its history. It can take various forms – both metaphorical and subtle or of an open manifesto, overtly engaging in politics, violating social norms or giving voice to marginalised groups. During the meeting, we will listen to some groundbreaking examples from the history of popular music from the early 20th century to the new millennium. We will learn about musical language, lyrics and performance strategies that have allowed artists to express resistance to the system and build new identities. From blues to hip-hop, through rock-and-roll and punk – popular music is not only entertainment, but also a tool that, in the right hands, serves social, cultural and political change.
