On 27 March the mezzo-soprano of Maria Forsström will take us away from reality into the world of fairy-tale creatures, dreamlike visions and a centuries-old love story.
The concert will open with Gretchen am Spinnrade by Franz Schubert, setting a fragment of Goethe’s Faustus. Nacht und Träume will lull us with its images of night and dreams. Erlkönig is a legend of the alder king ruling the swamps and forests of northern Europe.
Schubert’s songs will be followed by Schöngerg’s Gurrelieder drawing from Romantic motifs.
Guerre was a medieval castle of King Waldmer, who fell in love with Tove, making the jealous queen consort take revenge on the king’s beautiful paramour. The romance is most probably a legend, but the ruins of Guerre can be still visited in Denmark. Jacek Kaspszyk is in his element while conducting Neo-Romantic works, and the dramatic character of Gurrelieder corresponds with his own experiences as operatic conductor.
