Anoushka Shankar, an Indian sitar player and composer, is one of the most recognisable names on the World Music stage, receiving five Grammy Awards nominations. Music runs in her family. The daughter of famous sitar player Ravi Shankar and the half-sister of american singer Norah Jones began her music career very young. At the age of sixteen she already signed her first exclusive recording contract. She was also the youngest-ever Grammy nominee in the World Music category. She collaborated with various artists, among them Sting, M.I.A., Herbie Hancock, Norah Jones and Lenny Kravitz.
Although firmly settled in the Indian Classical music tradition, Shankar does not confine herself to one musical style. In her work she appreciates collaborative and cross-cultural approach, which results in bold and unique sound combining different music genres such as flamenco, jazz, electronica and western classical music. What is more, she expands the boundries of music as an art form. While recording her last album she collaborated with an actress Vanessa Redgrave and a dancer Akram Khan.
In Wroclaw we will be able to enjoy Anoushka Shankar's extraordinary talent on the 21st October 2016 during the concert within Guitar Masters Festival 2016. She is going to perform pieces from her brand new album Land of Gold. It will be her first ever concert in Wroclaw and one of only two performances planned in Poland as part of the tour promoting the album. Land of Gold is a personal statement of the artist known for her social involvement. The album is her response to the tragic fate of refugees and expression of solidarity with their suffering and the injustice they experience on their way to title Land of Gold – the sanctuary of connectedness, calmness and safety – the place they could call home. This album represents that wandering, as well as an inner journey in search for peace and self-acceptance.
Album Land of Gold is a result of Shankar’s collaboration with Manu Delago, world famous Hang* player, who also cooperated on the album as a co-composer. He will join Anoushka Shankar during performance in Wroclaw along with Sanjeev Shankar (playing shehnai) and Tom Farmer (double bass and keyboards). Shankar's concert within the 19th Guitar Masters Festival in Wroclaw is undeniably a must-see for any music enthusiast.
* Hang – created in 2000, Hang is one of the youngest musical instruments in the world. It belongs to the idiophone class. It consists of two profiled and interconnected steel bowls and looks like a flying saucer. It quickly became popular among musicians due to its extraordinary sound
