Songs, let’s call them social, of various character: feast, love, political, religious; both court canzonas and folk ballads, knightly ballads, beggars’ wailing, psalms and some polyphonic pieces that can be sung at the table or by leading a mazurka or a polonaise, and also useful notations of simple dances. That is a diverse world of more or less popular songs and melodies. One can risk the statement that almost everything that belongs to this repertoire is of a low flight, especially when it comes to the music side. These popular and serious songs were created both under the influence of ‘low’ western music, especially Italian, but also French and German, as well as deriving from the world of melody and local customs, which today we would call ‘folk’…
