The finale of Musica Polonica Nova will feature works by three artists associated with the Polish contemporary music scene, focusing on string instruments. Compositions by Ewa Trębacz, Piotr Tabakiernik and Przemysław Scheller will crown the thirty-third edition of this festival. They will be performed by Adam Bałdych, Ewa Trębacz and the NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra conducted by Christian Danowicz.
Metanoia by Ewa Trębacz is a violin concerto composed with an improviser soloist in mind. The instrumental parts here are derived from the sound material of the electronic layer and are based on two performance traditions present in musical cultures for centuries: heterophony and improvisation. The violin part is partly notated and partly improvised. The soloist’s task is therefore to answer, in a sense to interpret the proposed motifs – in interaction with the orchestra, electronic part and space. In the composition in latitudinem by Piotr Tabakiernik for string trio and string orchestra, the core becomes the smaller of the ensembles around which the musical narrative is conducted.
The Little Match Girl is dedicated to the memory of the Przemysław Scheller’s mother. He avoids delving into the impulses that led to the composition of the piece, thus leaving open space for its interpretation. Highly interesting is the treatment of the string orchestra. Individual instruments emerge from the line-up, assuming the roles of soloists. However, it is in vain to look for a direct reference to Andersen’s fairy tale, although it is worth noting some metaphorical references to the themes present in it, and these are primarily human longings.
