During the April concert, we will hear the music of Polish and Czech composers, starting from the Romantic period. These will be works inspired by folklore composed by Stanisław Moniuszko, Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák and Witold Lutosławski. In their youth, all the composers developped a passion and love for music, as well as respect for their countries of birth. In their adult lives, they wrote in the spirit of cultural traditions, inspired by folk music.

The title of the concert refers to Bedřich Smetana's orchestral work Ma Vlast. The cycle consists of six symphonic poems. The most famous of them is The Moldau. In it Smetana painted with sounds the course of the Vltava River, the longest river in Czechia. The colourful music, illustrating the beautiful Czech countryside, will take us on an extraordinary journey. With the eyes of our imagination we will see vast forests, fields and a village with wedding dance and song. During the concert, we will try to explain what it means that a piece of music is danceable. We will learn the character and rhythm of the mazurka, other Polish national dances and highlander dances by Stanisław Moniuszko. A special place in our programme will be taken by two dances from the Little Suite by Witold Lutosławski, an excellent contemporary composer. The Pipe with an idyllic character and the lively Hurra Polka, based on Polish folklore, will enchant us like a colourful folk cutout.

Works inspired by folklore will be presented by the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic under the baton of Czech conductor Marek Prášil.
