Dal:um is a Korean music ensemble made up of two members performing on Korea’s most well-known string instruments: the gayageum (Suyean Ha) and geomungo (Hyeyeong Hwang). Dal:um made its debut in 2018 and since then the artists have been constantly challenging the possibilities of these two traditional instruments. The ensemble experiments by innovating and modernising the instruments’ sound.

The name Dal:um refers to the way in which people keep trying their best at something once they have successfully started – and reflects the musicians’ strong will. The gayageum and geomungo may look similar, but their sounds are almost like opposites of each other. They are built with a totally different structure and have different playing techniques. The combination of the two can provide the most unexpected sound quality – sometimes clean and minimal but at other times very powerful and striking.

The silk strings from these two instruments combine to produce unexpected sounds that complement each other to produce an experience that is both fulfilling and beautiful. Dal:um will show how innovative interpretations can create a harmony of strong energy and alluring voices with their two instruments.
