The concert of the New Music Orchestra conducted by Szymon Bywalec will feature works by three composers. In addition to the works of two contemporary artists, there will also be a piece by an Italian composer considered one of the classics of the second half of the 20th century.
Rituals – Men & Machines for 11 instruments, electronics and video is the work of France’s David Hundry, born in 1978. This composer and musicologist has many solo, chamber, orchestral and electronic works to his credit. As he admits, when creating Rituals – Men & Machines, he was inspired by places in and around Wrocław related to industry (mainly Wrocław Industrial Park) and the combination of tradition and modernity present in the city.
Luigi Nono is considered one of the most important composers in the second half of the 20th century. His La fabbrica illuminata for soprano and tape from 1964 went down in the history of music. The title contains a play on words because it is about both an illuminated factory and an enlightened factory. Nono believed in the political power of music and with this work he wanted to show the harsh working conditions of workers and the exploitation they fall victim to. The artist used the electronically transformed sounds of factory work to present his assumptions; singing, speaking and shouting were also subjected to similar treatments.
The work by Michael Beil exit to enter for six instruments, electronics and real time video was created in 2013. The composer admitted that he was particularly interested in what happens during the concert, and what is not music. In a commentary to this piece, he provocatively stated: ‘Actually, it is not clear if this is my music; here and there it is clear that it is not.’
